Words of Wisdom

One of the most interesting hands I've seen occurred during the High Point sectional on Saturday.
Your left hand opponent deals and opens 2 ª. Your partner overcalls 3 § and RHO passes.

You hold:

ª - Void
© - Ax
¨ - AKQJ8xxx
§ - Axx

I asked 11 people who did not hold this hand what they would do. Four bid 5 NT, which is Grand Slam force. This asks partner to bid 7 § with two of the top 3 club honors. Assuming he bids, you convert to 7 ¨ . The most common answer was to just bid 7¨ . This is what five of the eleven people did.

Only 2 of the 11 made the winning bid on this hand. This was 4NT, Key Card For clubs. Your partner shows 2 key cards with the Queen of clubs. Now, assuming diamonds aren't 5 - 0, you can count 13 tricks and bid 7 NT.

Interestingly enough, only 2 pairs out of about 26 E-W pairs bid 7NT: Bill and Betty Simpson and Bruce and Sue Bedient. Well Done!
