Our unit designed and implemented a mentor program in January, 2007.  It was very popular, and we conducted surveys to see how we could make it better.

When this year’s program began, the interest had spread like wildfire!  Again, people from every city throughout the unit participated.

This year’s mentor celebration game was held on Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Georgia Taylor Recreation Center in Winston-Salem.  There were 58 pairs participating - a Life Master  playing with a Non Life Master. The winners were 1st - Shirley Stump and Pat Hoffmann, 2nd - Betty Kelley and Carolyn Fuquay, and 3rd  - Bill Wisdom and John Schultz.

Thanks ever so much to everyone who participated in our unit’s program. You eagerly accepted the chance to share your bridge knowledge as well as your love of the game.  You were committed to making it work!  Thanks also to Royce and Rosalie Blowe who held mentor sessions at their home in Greensboro, to Don Gardner for Monday sessions in Winston-Salem, and to our Life Masters who mentored more than one NLM.

We have had much positive feedback about the program.  One NLM said that he had learned so much and was very appreciative of the help he had received from such a good mentor. One LM said that  learning works both ways - her fascination with the bridge game makes it a continual learning experience. And, it was just fun!  However, the key
to the program’s
success is the caring people in our unit!

Thanks ever so much to all the directors who spent lots of time pairing the players.

January 2008

Our mentor program last year exceeded by far our expectations for participation.  The final surveys showed that most people would like to do it again!  And so, Unit 169 has decided to make February, 2008 - Mentor Month.  Our mentors will be Life Masters who will agree to play 2 games with their Non Life Master partner during the month and be available to go over hands and answer questions during the month.

Since 67% of our membership is made up of Non Life Masters, we would request that each NLM have only 1 mentor, but Life Masters could certainly help as many people as they would like.  It is permissible to mentor a friend or neighbor who might become a member of our unit.

The two games could be played at any of the games in our unit.  A final celebration game with Unit Championship points will be held in Winston-Salem at the Georgia Taylor Recreation Center on Monday afternoon, March 3 at 1:00 P.M.  This game will be for mentor program participants only and is not mandatory for the participants.  Happy Hearts Bridge Club will not have a regular game that day.

Each director will have sign up sheets for Life Master mentors and Non Life Master players who would like to participate in this program.  Although it is extra work for all the directors, I think the program is very important to our unit.

Thanks to everyone for helping to make this program work!
